Tagore: Architecture and Education in India

In the summer of 2016 I had the great privilege of traveling to India to do research with Professor Maria Claudia Andre for three weeks. We received a Nyenhuis Grant to investigate the life and influence of acclaimed poet, playwright, novelist, artist, musician, and celebrated traveler Rabindranath Tagore. I was interested in his philosophies of education, particularly because they relied heavily upon the importance of nature. I researched Tagore’s philosophies of education in its relationship to nature, and then studied his architectural design for his college in Shantiniketan. Here I witnessed Tagore’s philosophies come to life. I created a StoryMap to trace Tagore’s educational journey and the impact it has left on modern education today.
